C4Real helps prepare students for a work situation

At C4Real, we believe it is important to invest in the future of our industry. That's why we mentor future 3D designers, art directors and motion designers.

After all, they are the ones who carry on the profession for which we have a great passion. That is why we cooperate a lot with educational institutions such as Saxion Hogeschool and ROC van Twente. This cooperation goes beyond merely supervising interns and graduates and bringing them into contact with the work field. For example, our C4Real employees give various master classes. A great example is the joint involvement in BuROCee in Enschede.

BuROCee

During the past period we have had the pleasure, within two extensive lesson components, to work together with students within BuROCee; an initiative from ROC van Twente. Here, media design students are given the opportunity to work with real clients on party assignments linked to the industry. The twelve students we supervise come from various disciplines, taking up the challenge to deepen or broaden their knowledge.

The assignments

Part of the project is that the students created an assignment for us.

Assignment 1: From storyboard to a 2d motion graphics animation with adobe Character Animator; the assignment was about animating a 2D character in Character Animator CC. The students investigated the possibilities for character animation in this new application from Adobe Suite. In this program, it is possible to animate an animation in real time using controllers. Supporting the assignment, the students were given a short storyboard and the production character assets.

Assignment 2: Create a short 3D animation based on STEP source models; the assignment given to the students was to create a 3D animation based on existing 3D models from our client where the focus was on the workflow. This was to simulate how the creation of a 3D production usually works in practice. The students were free in their choice of software and how they designed the animation. We will explain this assignment a little further.

The introduction

In the introductions, the students were introduced to the process we use when making our productions. Art director Chris Leenheer: "This gives them a good idea of what they can expect when they join an employer later. The students were therefore, among other things, guided through the pre-production process; the important step in making animations. Here the customer's request is worked out visually with the help of, for example, a storyboard or a motion style guide. An important step in the production because then it becomes clear to the customer what he or she can expect as a final product".

Two weeks after the introduction a master class was given, under the guidance of Stefan Siderius Lead 3D Designer at C4Real, Chris Leenheer our Art Director was also present. During the master class Stefan went through the steps of a 3D production and gave some useful tips on how to properly execute a BuROCee assignment. Stefan and Chris then gave individual feedback on the students' work.

Final performance

Stefan Siderius: "The students were allowed to present their assignments at the end of the project. During the final presentations we were pleasantly surprised with results and the process the students went through. Very nice to see was that some students, besides a beautiful end result, also used a storyboards to plan their animation before they started the final assignment. The students were also open to feedback and reflection, allowing them to learn optimally from this whole experience. We therefore look back on a successful project."

C4Real will continue to be involved with BuROCee in the coming year. C4Real's workforce consists of alumni from both Saxion Hogeschool and ROC van Twente. The above is an example of one of the collaborations we have with various educational institutions. If you would like to know more about this, please feel free to contact us.
