THE CHALLENGE: RECYCLING A SPORTS FIELD IN UNDERSTANDABLE LANGUAGE

TenCate Grass consists of a group of international manufacturers, suppliers, and installers of artificial grass and athletics tracks with a shared mission to create the best and most sustainable synthetic surfaces for the sports and leisure industry. And when you talk about sustainability, you also talk about recycling. For the recycling of sports fields, TenCate Grass launched Ecocept® on the market. A sub-base construction for sports fields that can be recycled at the end of its lifecycle for a new sub-base construction. But how do you explain the recycling process simply and in understandable language to the target audience? C4Real came up with the solution: a 2D explanatory animation.

How do you explain a complex story in an understandable way?

THE SOLUTION: 2D EXPLANATION ANIMATION

Recycling a sports field involves a lot. Materials from sports fields at the end of their life cycle need to be collected, processed, harvested, and reused into new materials. It seems simple, but it is quite a complicated process. Additionally, we were tasked with ensuring that the production was designed in such a way that it would be understood internationally. Furthermore, there was a clear limit to the available budget. C4Real came up with the solution in the form of a 2D explanatory animation. A 2D explanatory animation provides the opportunity to clearly represent a complex process in both image and sound.

Simplifying the story

THE PROCESS

Process analysis. That’s where it starts. Mapping out the entire process optimally, so that all steps in the recycling process of sports fields are completely clear and we also have no questions left. That is the basis. Then we get to work on translating the complex story into a simple and easy-to-understand version. We call that ‘simplifying the story’. Next, we create storyboards to translate it into visuals. Only then does it become truly clear whether the production will be as the client intends. Sometimes adjustments need to be made, sometimes not. Once the entire concept is agreed upon, we get to work on producing the animation.

The added value of the 2D explanatory animation

THE FINAL RESULT

The end result is a clear 2D animation of the recycling process of sports fields. As a viewer, you are taken through the flow from the beginning to the end of the process. Including the USPs of the new sub-base construction: shock resistant, water permeable, and energy restoring. For the visualisation of these USPs, icons from the TenCate library have been used.

The music used is stock music from existing loops that fit well underneath. The animation is also not too long, so it can also be used on social media. By opting for a 2D explanatory animation, the chance that customers remember the explanation is much greater, which also benefits the brand awareness of TenCate Grass Ecocept®. The 2D animation has also been rebranded for Tiger Turf®, a joint venture of TenCate Grass.
