IT ARCHITECTURE IN VR

Until recently, the insurance company Achmea was operating with all-powerful and outdated IT systems to support an insurance product for homeowners' associations (VvE’s). Until it was time for a transformation. SAP, a major brand of Enterprise Resource Planning software, would henceforth be the foundation for the new IT landscape. In this, all IT systems are interconnected. A nice thought, but that meant a shift from old working practices to new working practices. And change is not always easy for the employees who have to deal with it.

Achmea Metropolis

How wonderful it would be if every IT professional could discover what the new IT landscape entails and how all the separate systems work together. Once the nearly 1000 employees of Achmea understand that, they will see much better why the change in the IT architecture is important. Logical, isn't it? You want to see what it's all for!

THE SOLUTION

Positive attitude through impressive VR solution

Positive attitude through impressive VR solution

Positive attitude through impressive VR solution

Involving all IT staff in a change process is quite a job. Everyone has an opinion and all eyes need to be facing the same direction. Achmea was very aware of this. That was the moment Achmea called on the help of C4Real.

The question from Achmea was: help us to visually clarify how the old and new IT infrastructure works in order to achieve a successful business implementation of products that are realized with the new IT architecture. The goal here was to create a positive attitude towards the renewed IT landscape and to minimize resistance as much as possible. Plus, to ensure a successful business implementation of new IT systems, in this case for VvE’s.

Our answer and concept was: Visualize the complexity of the system by creating a metaphor with something that all IT professionals understand. And to communicate this through innovative technology, to truly engage and interest these IT professionals. This was achieved with Metropolis, the Achmea IT city, in Virtual Reality.

THE PROCESS

Metropolis, the Achmea IT city

Metropolis, the Achmea IT city

Metropolis, the Achmea IT city

In a city, all buildings and roads are interconnected, just like in an IT system. Put on the VR headset and you will be welcomed to Metropolis. In this VR city, each IT component is represented as a structure. Look over there, the police station, which represents Achmea's IT fraud center! All highway junctions are APIs (connections between different IT systems), and the central station symbolizes the customer portal. Everything is interconnected, just like the IT systems. The city is alive!

The story of Metropolis is a true interactive experience with a storyline. Within the city, all buildings have interaction points and each tells a part of the story. You can move around and within the city using your VR controllers. Here are interactive points that explain the components of the IT systems through animations and videos. This clarifies the role of each component and what it does in the larger picture. This has played a significant role in the successful implementation of the new IT system.

The results

The results

The results

• Onboarding IT architecture of IT employees after one day instead of three months.
• Zero defects at the launch of the VvE system.
• Extremely high reach of Metropolis among IT staff: 300 interested parties instead of a maximum of 50 for new concepts.

In short: very good results for Achmea Metropolis! For this reason, C4Real, together with Achmea, has won an AVA award for this production.
