The potential extension of the North/South Line (Noord/Zuidlijn) runs through one of the more complex areas of the Netherlands: via the Schiphol Tunnel and Schiphol Plaza, past the Judicial Complex and the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee (KMar) Barracks, to a future station at Amsterdam Zuid. To engage administrators and residents in this process, we translated the technical route into a 3D animation that shows the plan in context.
By adding the perspective of a future traveller, an abstract route becomes an imaginable future. Something you can have a conversation about, rather than a drawing you have to decipher.

THE CHALLENGE
At this stage, the extension of the Noord/Zuidlijn towards Schiphol and Amsterdam Zuid consists mainly of maps, drawings and policy documents. This is difficult to comprehend for administrators who need to organise political support, and for residents who are being asked for input.
The challenge lay in making a technical and sensitive route visible in a way that is both convincing at an administrative level and understandable for local residents.
THE SOLUTION
We translated the route into a 3D animation that shows the route in context: from an overview map of the region in detail through the Schiphol tunnel and past the surrounding buildings, including the Judicial Complex and the KMar Barracks.
To make the plan not only visible but also tangible, we added a scenario from the perspective of a future passenger viewing the area from the train.
THE FINAL RESULT
The animation gives administrators and residents a concrete image of the future connection for the first time, instead of a technical map or policy text. This makes it easier to actually have the conversation about support and participation.
