PITCH ROYAL NAVY

Team 31, an industrial consortium of shipbuilders and designers, has been formed for the Royal Navy's T31st bid. Babcock International Group is the prime contractor of this team of which Thales is also part. As a high-tech company in aviation, defense and information technology, Thales has also been a major contributor for the T31st bid to the Royal Navy, which was looking for new frigates. In doing so, they consider it important to work with market solutions that are already there, so that five new frigates can be built quickly, reliably and cost-effectively. Team 31 offers the ideal solution for this: Arrowhead 140.

Frigates for the Royal Navy

Since C4Real has been working with Thales for years in the field of high-quality animations, Thales put us forward as its partner. In a very short time, we created a very high-quality animation to support the T31e bid, which involves a total budget of approximately 1.25 billion euros. The animation provides a clear and realistic explanation of the solution Team 31 offers the Royal Navy. This partly resulted in winning the bid. With this, Thales wins a multi-million dollar order. In fact, it is the third largest order ever for Thales.

"C4Real and Thales have been working together for years. They help us visualize important projects and solutions. Their specialism to represent complex technology simply with 3D visualizations is very good. A very nice cooperation."

Successful collaboration between Thales, Babcock and C4Real

Focus on speed and cost

Rob Assink, Studio Manager at C4Real: "Speed, reliability and cost are very important to the Royal Navy. Therefore, the goal is to communicate as best as possible how Babcock can meet this objective. And they can. On an existing frigate, they can make the Thales Tacticos Combat Management System and a radar mast. Everything will be exactly as the Royal Navy wants. Because they are modifications on an existing platform, it can be done very quickly. Delivery is scheduled from 2023. Proven, capable and adaptable is the message central to the Team 31 communication."

High quality in a short time

"Additional challenge was that it was a pressure cooker production. Under high pressure, something of high quality had to be delivered in a short period of time. Bottleneck here is the rendering. Computers have to calculate each image in a 3D animation separately. At 25 frames per second, that can take quite a long time. Especially if you're working with simulations of water, as we did here."

Realistic water animations, fast rendering and co-creation

"In the animation, you see images of the existing Iver Huitfeldt, which transition into a 3D model. We adapted that to a Royal Navy-ready model. Then the Navy can modify it completely the way they want, and we show examples of that. This visualization was central to the bid that Team 31 did for the five frigates. Thanks to an upgrade of our render farms, we managed to manage the rendering to the customer's expectations in the short production time. As a result, the animation looks very high quality and we delivered it on time. With realistic water simulations. The beauty of this production is that we really worked in co-creation with Thales and Babcock. We already knew each other well, of course, but we had never worked so closely together before. That worked out well, especially when you see what the joint end result is."
